Teaching, Coaching, and Mentoring

What is the main difference between teaching, coaching, and mentoring?

Teaching is more focused on helping an individual learn a concept, coaching is helping an individual learn a basic action or how to improve that action, and mentoring is more personal; helping someone attain a personal goal or helping someone keep track of their progress towards a certain goal.

Why is important to know the difference between these terms?

It is important to know the difference because it helps you know what style or what type of instructor you want to be for your students. This can also depend on or change to accommodate your specific class/group of students.

When looking for a mentor, seek out someone who’s had a career that aligns with your goals. “A mentor can be someone you admire or who’s done what you’re interested in doing,” says Grimes. “Pay attention to who you resonate with, and allow the relationship to develop organically.” While social media platforms allow you to follow and connect with professionals you admire, it may be difficult to develop an authentic relationship there considering all the competing distractions.

Teaching: Teaching the juniors by helping them learn the new genres in every chapter, teaching them the history, terminology, and technique.

Coaching: Coaching the juniors by demonstrating and correcting techniques as needed.

Mentoring: Answering questions they have regarding dance and careers as a whole. Giving them resources to look into for their future interests.

Facilitating: Allowing students to apply their knowledge of the various styles at the end of each unit through the use of student choreography. They also apply this when choreographing for the end-of-the-year showcase.
